Opening Day is June 9

Hi there,

We’ve worked really hard to get the Farm ready for the 2022 Season. We’ve been so excited to welcome you back this summer. And we can’t wait to show you all our great additions to the Farm. We know it’s going to be our best year yet.

After much thought and prayer, we have decided not to open the Farm June 2nd, like we originally planned. We want our Farm and staff to be as prepared as possible for this season, so that means pushing Opening Day back a bit. Our strawberries are also taking a little longer to bloom thanks to this colder-than-usual spring.

We’ve made the difficult decision to now open June 9th, just one week later. Farm Camp will continue as scheduled for June 7th-10th. And our Produce Stands are open now!

Despite this schedule adjustment, we’re so looking forward to the day when the Farm is open and full of you guys. You make this farm life we live a joy. And we cannot wait to start our 2022 season.

Until then, stop by our roadside stands for some delicious produce. And we’ll see you soon at the Farm,

Something New

Winter is technically our off season, but that doesn’t mean we stop working. To be honest, work never stops on the farm. There are always animals to feed, fields to tend, projects that build up until we have some focused time to dedicate to them. But this winter, we’ve been working on something extra special…. A NEW KITCHEN!

After three seasons of hamburgers and Little Farmer meals and serving everything out of the same space we were putting it all together in, we knew we had to change something about our kitchen situation. While we loved how functional our old space was, as the Farm keeps growing and our imaginations keep dreaming, we knew more space was absolutely essential.

We broke ground for the new building late fall and have made great progress over these very mild months. The new kitchen will be triple the size of our last building and include a huge walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer. Boy, do we have plans for those!

For instance, we cannot wait to freeze our fresh produce as it ripens. Peaches, strawberries, watermelon and more. With the ability to store it frozen, and keep the integrity of the fruits or veggies, we can continue using our lush summer produce as long as we want. Or prep fall product way in advance. Plus, there will be more room to move around and work—which will make all of us happy!

This is a big celebration for us as we’ve been dreaming about this remodel almost since we opened. It’s been so fun to watch it come together this winter. We just can’t wait to have you all back to the Farm so you can officially christen the new kitchen. We’re so excited to serve you out of it, and to continue making Pam’s Kitchen a delicious must-do while you spend the day, and the season, with us.

Merry Christmas from the Nelsons!

Can you believe Christmas is almost here? December seemed to fly by at record speed. In fact, this whole year seemed to be set on fast forward.

It feels like only yesterday we were making plans for our 2021 season, planting seeds, and welcoming baby animals to the farm. Now we’ve closed out the season, harvested all the crops and watched the cute little babies grow into adult animals who are still cute, but much less cuddly.

Christmas is such a special time on the Farm. Our donkeys remind us of Mary’s hard journey to Bethlehem for the Roman census. When we’re working in the barn, we easily think of Mary and Joseph and the unlikely accommodations they had to welcome their firstborn baby, Jesus. When we feed the sheep, we think of the shepherds in the fields, keeping watch. We imagine the angels who appeared to them to tell them about Jesus’ birth. And as we wrap presents for our girls to be opened Christmas morning, we think of the wisemen, who traveled the desert to meet this baby who would one day grow up to be the Savior of the world.

Christmas is a holiday for family, and friends, and loved ones. But it’s also the holiday where we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. And the sacrifices He made. First to come to earth as a baby, fully man, fully God. And then as a sacrifice for our sins. Crucified on the cross. But raised again in redemption and victory.

We’re praying peace over you this season. And wishing you a holiday full of hope and love.

Happy Thanksgiving from the Nelsons!

Can you believe Thanksgiving is tomorrow? November has just flown by. And now the holidays are upon us, and we can’t seem to stop smiling from ear to ear with anticipation. Not just for tomorrow, but for all the festivities yet to come this season.

We just got back from an end-of-the-season family trip to Yellowstone National Park where we rested after a wonderful, but hectic season on the Farm, marveled at the sheer glory of God displayed all around us, and reconnected as a family. We had the best time. And our hearts are so soft for this Thanksgiving season and all we have to be grateful for after such a much-needed break.

But at the center of counting our blessings is you. We are so very thankful for the way you have supported and shared our Farm and Produce Stands. We could not do what we do without you, your many visits to our home, and the way you consistently share your good experiences with your friends and family. Thank you for making 2021 another record year for us. We sincerely can’t wait to welcome you back in the new year.

But first, we hope you enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday! Some of my (Pam’s) favorite childhood memories are from this holiday. We’d gather as a big family, grandparents, aunts and uncles, all the cousins, and just enjoy spending time together. The older women would prepare the food and then my sisters and I, along with our cousins, would clean up and do the dishes. It sounds like a chore, but the laughter, good times and intention of the task made up some of my most special memories of being together as a family. It’s a tradition I can’t wait to lovingly pass along to my own girls.

What are some of your family traditions? What are you passing onto the next generation?

Have a wonderful, happy, blessed, and safe Thanksgiving!

We can’t say thank you enough for such a phenomenal 2021 season! We welcomed so many new friends, reconnected with old ones, and got to share our farming life with so many of you. You are the real reason our business exists. And we love having you all be a part of our everyday life.

Whether you shopped at one of our stands, spent the day at the Farm, or joined us for a Pizza and Pie Night, you were the highlight of our season. And we are so sad to say goodbye. Even while at the same time we are so excited to grow, add, and get ready for next year.

We are passionate about farming, and about educating everyone about the hard work and big joy that comes out of it. Whether our staff is helping you pick out the perfect watermelon at one of our produce stands, or you’ve gotten to hear our story at one of our Farm to Table Suppers, we hope we’ve been able to share a little of why we do what we do with you personally. And we hope you’re just a little more passionate about agriculture in Nebraska too.

During our off-season, stay up to date with us on our socials—Facebook and Instagram. And make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter. Any announcements about sales, season passes, and upcoming events will go out in the newsletter first! Plus, newsletter recipients get first chance at things like season passes and Farm to Table Dinners.

Finally, join us for our Warehouse Sale THIS Friday, the 5th of November, at the Farm from 2-6pm. We’re cleaning out our pantry, Market, and getting rid of the rest of our straw. Everything is priced to sell. Cash and carry everything, but meat, $10 and under. Meat will be packaged into bundles and priced very nicely as well. If you’re wanting to restock your own pantry before winter, make sure you come out!

Thank you again for our best season yet. We can’t wait to do it all over again.

Spend Fall on The Farm

Fall is finally, officially, here! We are so excited to be celebrating Fall on the Farm with you! There is nothing better than pumpkins, and mums and crisper weather—which has been perfect recently.

Our stands are open every day through October 30th! And they have all the fun, fresh fall produce we love at this time of year. We’ll have watermelons until the first frost. Our peaches and plums are still deliciously juicy. And the last of the corn is still available. We’ve also set up our pumpkins and fall decorations for you to shop! Stop by any day! We’re open till 7pm at both locations.

If you haven’t been out to the Farm lately, now is a great time to come visit. We have two new ponies to meet. And our alpaca mama, Dolly, had an adorable baby boy last week. The ponies are the sweetest new friends. One is three years old. And the other is ten. They can’t wait for you to come out and say hi. And since we’re still deciding on all their names, you’ll have a chance to give us your opinions, by dropping your suggestions into a bucket near their pens.

We’ve also got our haystack slides up and running! And our pumpkin patch is ready to be picked. Come join us for Pizza and Pie night this Friday night or spend this gorgeous weekend picking produce, riding our barrel train and finding the perfect pumpkins to decorate your porches, carve or give away to your favorite people!

September is National Apple Month! Which means we’re serving up all your fav apple desserts and baked goods. Pam’s Kitchen is featuring caramel apple nachos, apple cider slushees, and hot apple cider if you get chilled! Along with our famous chili and homemade beef stew. Our pizzas for Pizza and Pie Night are your original woodfire faves. But pies for this month are mouthwatering Dutch Apple Pie and Caramel Apple Pie.

Because the days have started to shorten, we’re changing up our hours a bit. Pizza and Pie Night will now go from 5:00 to 7:00 to give you as much daylight as possible.

Join us for Women’s Worship Night September 30th! This event is totally FREE. We love to gather our favorite girls around the campfire and sing praises to our Great God. So grab your moms, sisters, best friends, MOPS groups, and whoever else you can find, and join us Thursday night from 7:00-9:00 to sing glory to God. Bring a lawn chair so you’re comfortable. Complimentary coffee and lemonade available.

We can’t wait to see you soon! Happy fall y’all! Come make memories.

Buy LOCAL!

You know we have two produce stands in Omaha. One on 120th and I St. and one on 204th and Wirt. But do you know why buying local produce is so much better than swinging into your local grocery store?

Nebraska has an incredible farming community. And great grocery stores. But a lot of our produce in the store is shipped in from climates that are able to grow produce all year round. Mexico, for instance, exports a lot of produce to our grocery stores—especially in the winter months.

On the other hand, produce bought from local stands is not just from Nebraska, but grown and picked local to Omaha. Maybe not everything. Avocados, for example, are almost impossible to grow here. But we’ve done the leg work to form a relationship with an American farm we know and trust for the best avocados. In fact, everything we offer at our stands, that we are unable to grow ourselves, is from a family farm in America that we respect and have a good relationship with.

Apart from avocados, the majority of our produce is grown locally, at our farm, just outside of Omaha. We have watched it mature from seedling to crop, picked it, and placed it at our stands just for you. When you stop by one of our farm stands, you know where your fruit and veggies came from. You have our quality guarantee. And we hope you know everything was grown with love and respect for the process of farming and for the consumer who will take it home.

Our produce isn’t picked before its ready. And it doesn’t sit in shipping containers for long periods of time. We consider maturity and ripeness in all that we do. Meaning, when you buy something from our stands, it’s ready or just about ready to be eaten. And we have a sweetness guarantee with our melons. If they are not up to your standards, bring them back and we’ll give you a new one. We’ll even help you pick it out!

Grocery stores are necessary for the rest of our lives though. And if you do find yourself shopping the produce section, check out the stickers before you buy. Look and see where the fruit or veggie was grown. Does the sticker say another country? Or somewhere locally? Sometimes there are even sections of produce boasting a farm in the Midwest. Our farm even sells to several of the grocery stores around here. Look for our A&T Farm signage.

Regardless of where or how you buy your produce, we just want you to get the best. Fruits and veggies are some of God’s greatest gifts to us. So don’t settle for something shipped from far away when we have a bountiful harvest right at home. Now until the end of October is a fantastic time for all the great fresh fruits and vegetables. Stop by a stand today and enjoy shopping—and eating—local!

What to do with Veggies?!?

Our #FarmFactFriday on our Facebook Page this week is about picking out ripe and ready fruit and veggies. But what happens when you get home and aren’t ready to eat them? Where do they go? What tricks will keep them tasting freshest longest?

We wanted to explain the best ways to store your produce to maximize freshness.

1.     Corn—Sweet Corn is best kept in the refrigerator with the husk on. This allows the corn to maintain its moisture without losing its sweetness. If you’ve already shucked the corn, your best bet is to wrap the ears in saran wrap. But always keep it refrigerated. And for fresh tasting corn that is still sweet, keep it in the husk and eat within a couple days.

2.     Tomatoes—Unlike corn, you want to keep your tomatoes out of the fridge. (Unless they’re already cut up.) Store them at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. And to keep them fresh for longer, store them stem side down.

3.     Watermelons—Keep these beauties in the fridge! They don’t really ripen further once you’ve brought them home. So it’s best to keep them cold.

4.     Cantaloupes—On the other hand, these melons will continue to ripen. So if you’ve brought home a cantaloupe still showing a little green, go ahead and keep it on the counter for a couple days to ensure it’s as sweet as it can get when you finally cut into it.

5.     Cucumbers—We always keep cucumbers in the fridge! You can even keep them fresh up to a week if you wrap them in paper towels, and seal them in a Ziploc. As long as they’re cold, they should hold their freshness pretty well.

6.     Zucchinis—These delicious squash can also be kept up to a week in the fridge! Just put them unwashed, in an open-ended paper bag, and pop them into the vegetable crisper drawer for best results.

7.     Peppers—Also fridge bound, but make sure you wash them before you store them.

Home Raised Beef!

Just over two years ago, we opened the doors of our farm and invited you all out to enjoy the great Nebraska outdoors, good, clean family fun, and all our land has to offer. But what you might not know is that long before we were a place where you could come and play, we were (and still are) a real, working farm.

We supply produce commercially, work with grocery stores and other produce vendors, and raise our own cattle for beef and pigs for pork. We love the process of watching something start small or from a seed and grow into food that sustains our city and your family. There is something immensely satisfying about being part of the process from start to finish.

Our meat inventory is the biggest it’s ever been as we work to keep up with our expanding farm. Which is good news for you! We’re bundling our meat into packages to fit your family and mealtime needs.

There are immense benefits to buying local beef and pork. For starters, you know where your meat is coming from. We’re not a massive, anonymous cattle farm. But a family you know. We love our animals and treat them with the utmost respect, having a unique perspective on how valuable and necessary the process is. And we believe the product we ultimately offer is the highest quality, at a reasonable price.

As beef prices skyrocket in the grocery store, we can offer a reasonably priced product that won’t break your bank. And it tastes great! Our beef is Angus, home-raised, grass and produce fed, and corn finished. A product you can feed your family and feel good about.

Stop by either of our stands or at the farm to checkout our bundles HERE! You can also now order them online and pick up at your convenience. Order your package today and find out what you’ve been missing at your table.

Opening Week Recap AND Tickets

We closed out our second open weekend at the farm today and are still so amazed at all that has happened! We love having our land busy and bustling. And we really love seeing all your smiling faces again!

We enjoyed record numbers of strawberries opening weekend. They are so plump and so juicy this year. Perfect for picking. The heat has slowed their growth some, so they’re completely picked for now. But as soon as we get a break from the heat, and they start blooming again, we’ll let you know!

Our Quonset is full of life too. Our baby animals are growing quickly. The miniature donkey and longhorn cow are the highlights of the day. And our playful goats are just waiting to eat from your feed cup. The animals are always a farm favorite, but this year guests are really enjoying the indoor spaces and sweet new furry faces.

Opening weekend, we were also able to host our first ever Pizza and Pie Night for our season ticket holders! Farmer Ty turned out to be the best pizza maker. And everyone who attended enjoyed wood-fire pizzas and fresh strawberry pie. It was so great to have people out at the farm during the evening, when the weather cools down. Our sunsets are some of the best in Nebraska and the one during Pizza and Pie Night did not disappoint!

We’re gearing up for our next Pizza and Pie Night this Friday! And this week, we’re opening it up to everyone! You can grab your tickets ahead of time and come hungry Friday night at 6:00pm. Once you place your order in Pam’s Kitchen, you’ll be able to explore the farm, take a barrel train ride or go for a hayrack ride while we prepare it. Then we’ll text you when it’s ready. Grab your tickets HERE.

We rounded out these last couple weeks with our first Farm to Table Supper of the season! The weather was stormy and rainy all Friday, so we worried about what the evening would be like. But the rain dried up and the temps cooled down. And we ended up with the most perfect June evening. Saturday evening was just as lovely, and the weather in the evening cooled down right on time.

We celebrated a dairy inspired menu for Dairy Month both evenings. Chef Katie whipped up the tastiest Charcuterie Board featuring Midwest cheeses and deli meats to start with, followed by Slow Roasted Creamy Chicken, Mushroom Orzo and Crispy Zucchini and Squash Chips—which were a favorite of the night. Attendees enjoyed a hayrack ride around the farm at dusk. And we finished with farm trivia and a delicious Farmer’s Cheese twist with homemade Strawberry Rhubarb Jam and Vanilla Ice Cream.

The evenings were wonderfully sweet. We had the best time. And we hope those that joined us did too. We can’t wait to do it again next month! Tickets go on sale this week for July’s Farm to Table. Fair warning, they do sell out quickly! If you’re interested in joining us, be ready to grab them as soon as they go live.

Friendly reminder, Newsletter Subscribers get first chance at all ticketed events. So, if you’re hoping to snag some July Farm to Table tickets, signing up for the newsletter is your best bet!

Thank you to everyone who has stopped by the farm, picked up produce at one of our stands, or told their friends and family about us! We cannot do this without you and just love having you along with us for this wild journey. Can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Stands are OPEN!!!

Our Roadside Produce Stands opened Thursday! We were blown away by the community support and excitement for fresh produce. It was so great to see everyone face to face again! What a wonderful way to start our season.

This winter seemed extra-long for some reason. And I know we’re all tired of internationally imported fruits and veggies that have been picked too early and sat in shipping containers for way too long. Bring on all the local produce please!

We’re starting off this season with a bang! And while we do ship some of our produce up from the southern states, we’ve worked tirelessly over the last ten years to make sure we’re bringing the best, ripest, juiciest fruits and veggies we can find from farms we trust and respect—family farms, just like ours.

Our peaches are from one of our favorite Georgia farms, Lane Orchard. And they’re saying this is the best crop of peaches they’ve had in years. Aren’t you excited to grab some for you and your family! We love to eat them fresh, over the sink of course, so we don’t make a mess. But they’re also so good sugared with ice cream. Or grilled and finished with a little homemade whipped cream.

Our watermelon and cantaloupes are also an exceptional crop this year. We’ve partnered with farms in Texas to bring you an excellent selection. Our Black Diamonds will be ready by mid-June, but you will not be disappointed while you wait! Try either melon just the way they are. Or dice them up and add them to a salad with feta cheese, tomatoes, and balsamic dressing.

Finally, straight from our farm, we have cucumbers, zucchini, green beans, and yellow squash! Plus, at our I Street location, we have coolers full of bacon, brats, and ground beef. Did we just plan your meals for the week? Or at least your holiday weekend BBQ, right? 

Come out and see us! Produce stands are open Monday-Saturday 8:00am-7:00pm and on Sunday from 9:00am-6:00pm. They’re located in Elkhorn at 204th and Wirt Street, right next to Dairy Chef. Or in Millard at 120th and I street, on the southeast corner.

We hope you have a lovely Memorial Day Weekend and a great start to summer! Enjoy a FREE zucchini and yellow squash for purchases of $20 or more to celebrate opening weekend!

Happy Easter 2021!

Happy Good Friday!

As if the gorgeous weather and all the planting on the farm wasn’t perfectly spring enough, we’ve had an explosion of new life in our barns! Our little mamas all decided to have babies together. So, we’ve had our hands full of deliveries, new babes, and newborn life.

We’ve welcomed a baby goa named Sox, a baby donkey named Luke, and a baby lamb named Martha. They are about the sweetest things you could imagine. And they all came within three days of each other. We knew the mamas were pregnant, but we weren’t expecting their births so close together. We loved the surprise and are so happy they were born healthy!

What a blessing to walk into Easter weekend reminded of the miracle of life God is capable of. As the grass turns green again, the trees and flowers bloom, and our early planting starts to sprout, we can’t help but thank Jesus for His ultimate sacrifice on the cross and the new life we’ve also been gifted.

We hope you have a place to celebrate this Easter Sunday. And we cannot wait to welcome you back to the farm so you can meet our newest, cutest additions!

Season Passes are NOW AVAILABLE on our website! Purchase HERE!

As well as June Farm to Table tickets! Purchase HERE!

Long before Nelson Produce Farm was opened to the public, we dreamed about what it would look like and what we’d get to offer you. One of our very first visions was having families out to eat pizza made with the fresh produce and cheese straight from our garden and farm. We pictured the smokey smell of the woodfire ovens. Families dotting the ground, picnic style, right where the ingredients for their meal were grown. Little ones running around, catching lightning bugs during those early summer months. Laughter and good fun and great food and just everyone enjoying the season and our farm.

During our third season, we’re finally getting to make this dream a reality! Every Friday night you can join us for a special evening at the farm. We’ll be serving woodfire pizzas and homemade pie all summer long. Our rides and U-Pick will be open too. This is just some good, family fun with great food and a safe environment for the whole family. Plus, we know those summer days can be hot. If you’re trying to beat the heat an evening on the farm might by just the thing!

Tickets will include a whole pizza or fruit pie. Additional food items may be purchased throughout the evening. Season pass holders will have the opportunity to enjoy one Pizza and Pie night at half price!

We can’t wait to have you out to the farm! Grab your season pass today! - https://bit.ly/NelsonSeasonPass
